SİNEMASAL JOURNEY

2013 - 2025

What is Sinemasal ?

Sinemasal is a social enterprise leveraging the transformative impact of art to address social and global issues.

With the slogan "IMPACT of ART," it aims to use the transformative power of art to generate solutions, raise awareness, and create impact regarding social (issues arising within a country, society, or community) and global (issues concerning the entire world) challenges.

Through the call "so, what now?", it seeks to make visible the healing, unifying, and mobilizing potential of art in the face of global crises such as disasters, wars, economic depressions, and inequalities.

Sinemasal;

Uses art not merely as a realm of aesthetics, but as a tool to create change.

Directs this change toward both local problems and worldwide issues.

Aims not just to raise awareness, but to generate a transformative impact.

Enes Kaya Sinemasal

Founder & Head of Dreamers

“Hello everyone. I am Enes Kaya,

Following the 1999 Düzce earthquake, I was placed in a dormitory in Denizli. At the age of 12, I had become resentful toward a life I hadn’t even had the chance to truly get to know.

One day, while struggling with many questions about life, I was introduced to cinema through a movie poster I came across. I developed a passionate connection to cinema, where I discovered countless ways to be happy.

For me, cinema was proof that I was not alone in this life. The films I watched on the silver screen taught me that I had alternatives in life. First, I reconciled with myself, then with life, and I began to dream of a better future.

When I looked back in 2007, I realized that the richness, perspective, and excitement of new horizons cinema had brought to my life were the source of my happiness. However, I didn’t find it fair that children growing up in rural areas, just like me, were completely unaware of the magical world of cinema. I began to dream of finding permanent solutions to this social issue I had identified. Because cinema had taught me how to dream...

The dream I envisioned in 2007 became a social enterprise under the name ‘Sinemasal’ in 2012.

“Guided by the slogan, ‘You watch a movie and your life changes; if a child changes, the world changes!’, we worked to eliminate the problem of access to cinema on a global scale. From east to west, north to south, we brought an authentic cinema experience to the most remote mountain villages of Turkey.”

2007-2012

THE STORY OF SİNEMASAL’S FOUNDING & DEVELOPMENT

Enes Kaya is a cinema enthusiast in his 30s who himself grew up in a village.

The idea for Sinemasal emerged in 2007, driven by the hardships Enes Kaya experienced during his childhood and his sense of active citizenship, with the desire to introduce children living in villages to the magical world of cinema.

Following a six-year conceptual preparation process, Enes Kaya founded Sinemasal on December 30, 2012. His goal was to enable children with limited social, cultural, and economic opportunities to look at life more positively and to dream of a better future...

Founded on December 30, 2012, Sinemasal has introduced children and families living in socio-culturally disadvantaged regions of Turkey to the magical world of cinema for 13 years.

Working to make cinema accessible to everyone, Sinemasal aimed to completely eliminate the problem of 'Inequality of Opportunity in Access to Art' —at least in the field of cinema— through fair, effective, and sustainable methods.

By organizing festivals that include various workshops and events encompassing theater and music alongside cinema, Sinemasal has secured its place among the most comprehensive culture and art festivals in Turkey.

13 YEARS from 2013 to 2025

Between 2013 and 2025, we introduced 5.5 MILLION children to the magical world of cinema.

1.5 million children had the chance to experience the magical world of cinema by directly participating in Sinemasal festivals, 1 million through private sector and local government projects we consulted for, and 3 million through projects implemented by public institutions inspired by Sinemasal.

We organized a total of 20,000+ creative workshops during Sinemasal events spanning 13 years.

We traveled 300,000+ km, visiting 3,000+ locations in 81 provinces.

More than 10,000 volunteers from 48 countries took part in the events, getting the chance to witness firsthand the sparkle in the eyes of children experiencing cinema for the first time in their lives.

Click here for the Sinemasal Volunteers list.

We invited volunteers from 48 countries* to our events to make children feel part of a multicultural world and to introduce Anatolia and its people, with their unique beauty, to our international participants.

* Türkiye, USA, Germany, Albania, Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco, Philippines, Palestine, France, South Africa, South Korea, Georgia, Netherlands, Hong Kong, United Kingdom, Iran, Spain, Israel, Italy, Japan, T.R.N.C., Cambodia, Montenegro, Kenya, Kosovo, Costa Rica, Cuba, Macau (China), Macedonia, Malaysia, Mexico, Egypt, Nepal, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Senegal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Chile, Thailand, Taiwan, Ukraine, Jordan, Vietnam

Thanks to the valuable support of 1,000+ individual donors and 500+ corporate DREAM PARTNERS, all Sinemasal events were offered to participants FREE of charge.

And together, we raised awareness among MILLIONS of people...

2013

With the slogan “Cinema is in the Villages Now!”, the first Sinemasal festival was held in the Southeastern Anatolia region. Seven thousand children in the provinces of Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep, Adıyaman, Şanlıurfa, Diyarbakır, and Mardin experienced an authentic cinema experience for the first time in their lives.

Sinemasal was selected as The Most Comprehensive Youth Project by the Ministry for EU Affairs National Agency Youth Programs.

The Istanbul Bilgi University Young Social Entrepreneur Award went to Sinemasal!

2014

The 2nd Sinemasal Film Festival was held in the Eastern Black Sea region in Samsun, Ordu, Giresun, Trabzon, Rize, and Artvin.

With the Black Sea stage, we began reaching the socio-culturally disadvantaged neighborhoods of cities as well as villages by increasing the duration of the festivals. The discourse “Cinema is in the Villages Now!” was replaced by the slogan “You watch a movie, and your life changes; if a child changes, the world changes!

On December 30, 2014, Sinemasal House was opened in Balat, Istanbul.

Enes Kaya, with Sinemasal, was selected as a Changemaker by the Sabancı Foundation.

The Sabancı Foundation shared Sinemasal’s story with millions in print, visual, and audio media, featuring the voice of Cüneyt Özdemir.

Sinemasal received the special award for The Newest and Successful Festival Concept from the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism on the 100th Anniversary of Turkish Cinema.

Enes Kaya was selected as one of the top 20 social entrepreneurs worldwide by the International Youth Foundation. Kaya participated in a 21-day training camp in Peru as part of the YouthActionNet Program and subsequently received the title of Global Fellow at the award ceremony held in Lima, Peru.

2015

Sinemasal Academy was established.

(Click here for detailed information about the 2023-2024 earthquake zone activities implemented within the scope of Sinemasal Academy.)

With Sinemasal Academy since 2015;

We shared the experience we gained in the field as open source.

We provided training and consultancy services to public institutions, universities, local governments, non-governmental organizations, youth groups, and private sector companies that want to provide cinema experiences to children in their target regions.

Within the “May your dreams be your courage!” program, we encouraged high school and university students to develop projects in the fields of social entrepreneurship and culture-arts, and we supported the projects they developed. Throughout the program, young dreamers turned their ideas into projects and received training from experts in their fields on cost calculation and financial planning. By enabling young people, who set sail for their personal and/or social dreams during these most valuable times of their lives, to take initiative, we strived for the formation of a generation that prefers to produce rather than consume.

By coming together with Sinemasal friends in the training camps we organize at certain times of the year, we received training from professionals on:

- Development of event contents,

 - Development of income models and self-income generating activities for financial sustainability,

- Making the business model scalable in order to reach more children with a multiplier effect,

- Producing studies to improve public policies so that the problem of access to cinema is completely eliminated.

Sinemasal Enterprise Kit

SİNEMASAL ENTERPRISE KIT

In 2016, we prepared a design-wonder business plan reflecting the joyful spirit of Sinemasal and explaining our future dreams in full detail. With the specially designed Sinemasal Business Plan Kit, we wanted to demonstrate how much we value our dreams as well as communicate our values and activities to potential dream partners in an effective way.

Taking the fact that Sinemasal opens the door to a world unknown to children as our reference point, we created this business plan with a series of visual and physical components that offer different experiences and complement each other. For our business plan kits, we used original film canisters belonging to movies that hold an important place in the history of Turkish cinema. And we designed all other pieces accordingly.

Enes Kaya was selected as the Star of Social Entrepreneurship by the students of Istanbul University!

Sinemasal was accepted into the Google for Nonprofits program.

2017

Adding theater and music to the festival content with the slogan “Cinema - Theater - Music | A World of Beauty”, Sinemasal provided an unforgettable festival experience for children and youth living in the provinces of Kırıkkale, Yozgat, Kırşehir, Nevşehir, Aksaray, and Niğde in the Central Anatolia region.

In addition to the workshops, children and youth enjoyed themselves to their hearts' content with open-air cinema, theater performances, and Kurtalan Ekspres concerts.

We opened our Sinemasal Peru, South Africa, and Philippines offices.

Sinemasal initiated official contacts in Brussels toward becoming a partner institution of the United Nations.

December 30th was declared World Sinemasal Day! Young people from 34 countries sent congratulatory messages in their own languages.

Our corporate identity was completely renewed, and Next Generation Sinemasal was introduced!

Yeni Nesil Sinemasal Logo

With the expansion of Sinemasal dreams to the world, we transitioned to a new logo and corporate identity.

Along with many elements that inspired our new logo, we redesigned our corporate identity from scratch. According to the legend, we turned Peristera —a bird that represents beauty, love, and affection by transforming from a fairy into a dove— into the symbol of Next Generation Sinemasal. We added a world signifying that every child is of equal value, and a film strip traveling the world under Peristera’s wings. Finally, with an eye opening to colorful worlds, we emphasized how cinema changes our perspective on life.

Sinemasal Fark Yaratan Sosyal Girişim Ödülü

Sinemasal was included in the Best of 2016 list prepared by onedio.com for its work in the fields of culture, arts, and social entrepreneurship.

2018

The 6th Sinemasal Film Festival, organized as the Eurasia Stage, visited the provinces of Tekirdağ, Çanakkale, Balıkesir, Kütahya, Uşak, and Denizli in the Marmara and Aegean regions.

2019

The real cinema experience was brought to the children living in the provinces of Ardahan, Kars, Iğdır, Ağrı, Van, and Hakkari in the Eastern Anatolia region.

With the slogan “There will be no child who hasn't been to the cinema!”, in addition to the Sinemasal Film FestivalSinemasal Academy, and Sinemasal MiniFest projects, the Sinemasal Magnificent Tuesday Cinema Festival was launched. Through this project, children across Türkiye who did not have the opportunity to go to the cinema began to be transported to movie theaters.

- The children, welcomed by Sinemasal volunteers in the movie theaters, took their seats with popcorn, juice, and souvenir cinema tickets, experiencing the excitement of the cinema for the first time in their lives.

- During the intermission, short videos telling the success stories of role models who inspire children were screened.

- Following the screenings, children were gifted fairytale books that encourage dreaming.

- In cities without a cinema, halls within cultural centers belonging to local governments were transformed into a cinema atmosphere by Sinemasal volunteers for the screenings. In other words, there was no child left who hadn't been to the cinema.

With our “New Cinema to the Old Village” project, Sinemasal cinema halls were established by providing sound systems, screens, and projection support to 81 selected village schools in different regions of Türkiye.

2020

The 8th Sinemasal Film Festival was held in the Western Black Sea region in Sinop, Kastamonu, Bartın, Zonguldak, Karabük, and Çankırı, following the recommendations of our scientific committee and social distancing protocols.

Due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, 5 MiniFest projects planned to be organized in 2020 were postponed.

2021

Sinemasal Culture & Arts Association began working to establish a permanent festival area for children in the Balat neighborhood of the Fatih district in Istanbul, where its headquarters is located. Following an attempt by the parking lot mafia to seize the rented festival ground and the shooting of Sinemasal founder Enes Kaya —who stood his ground against this organized crime group— Sinemasal’s activities came to a halt…

2023-2024

Immediately reaching the region after the February 6, 2023 earthquakes —which impacted 11 provinces and deeply affected both our country and the world—Sinemasal made a significant difference in the lives of those impacted through search and rescue operations, humanitarian aid, psychosocial support, Sinemasal Academy campuses established on a total of 20 decares, and educational and cultural-arts programs.

Sinemasal ile film izleyen çocuk

For 13 years, the Sinemasal Film Festival brought cinema to the doorsteps of children living in rural areas across different regions of Turkey —children who had never been to a cinema and had no opportunity to do so. In this way, children were introduced to the magical world of cinema and watched the film that might perhaps change their lives.

In addition to the activities held in villages, film screenings, cinema workshops, panels, and talks organized in city centers added color to urban life. These events brought artists and the public together.

With the unique concept of the Sinemasal Film Festival, made possible by the voluntary participation of young people from 48 different countries —each with different cultures and diverse ways of thinking and creating— participants were provided with an unparalleled festival experience.

2026 & OUR FUTURE PLANS

In our Sinemasal journey, which has secured its place among the largest and most successful social enterprises not only in Turkey but in the world, everything we have experienced so far was merely a trailer of our dreams...

Until today, we have asked you: "How old were you when you went to the cinema for the first time? What was the name of the first movie you watched in a theater?" At the heart of our 2026 and future plans lies the question: "so, what now?" This question also serves as a call to action.

Now is the time to dare to think of the world from a different perspective!

Under the umbrella of Sinemasal, three new projects are launching with the slogan "IMPACT of ART" and the call of "so, what now?"...

WHY CINEMA?

Cinema enriches individuals' lives and expands our imagination through the emotions it evokes. The films we watch change our perspective on life.

However, children living in socially, culturally, and economically disadvantaged regions lack access to cinema. We felt this was unfair and believed that together, we could achieve equality.

Sinemasal Brotherhood

CINEMA ENSURES THE ESTABLISHMENT OF FRIENDSHIP AND TOLERANCE

Art has a healing and unifying power over individuals and society. By enhancing our ability to empathize, it enables individuals and societies to understand one another.

Cinema conveys all other branches of art within it to society through the most direct route. Films serve as a vital resource for discovering subjects, places, and people that are distant —and perhaps vastly different from our own geography— allowing us to experience different lives, even if only for a short time.

Viewers form a connection between themselves and the lives they encounter on the silver screen. In this way, cinema fosters cultural relationships between diverse social groups and facilitates the establishment of friendship and tolerance.

Sinemasal gişesinde mutlu çocuk

CINEMA DEVELOPS CHILDREN'S IMAGINATIONS

Festivals, workshops, shows, and screenings designed by Sinemasal with a focus on interactive and experiential learning open the doors to a world previously unknown to socio-culturally disadvantaged children.

The magical world of cinema nourishes children's minds, expands their imaginations, and sparks excitement in their little hearts.

By gaining an awareness of life's alternatives through the inspiration of cinema, children are empowered to dream of a better future.

Instilling the power of dreaming in children, Sinemasal also enables them to learn many values such as courage, kindness, purity, innocence, and trust.

"Cinema will ensure that people living in the remotest corners of the world get to know and love one another. It will dissolve the differences in views and thoughts among people, and make the greatest contribution to the realization of the ideal of humanity. We must grant cinema the importance it deserves.

How the Process Worked

We designed festivals, workshops, shows, and screenings focused on interactive and experiential learning

Sinemasal ile tanışan çocukların heyecanı

In light of our Ecological Values, we ensured that all materials used in our events are recyclable and harmless to both people and the environment.

In line with our Social Values, we collaborated with individuals and organizations that do not discriminate based on language, religion, race, or gender. We designed all our activities with a steadfast commitment to human rights and gender equality.

Guided by our Financial Values, we explored ways to use resources efficiently, regardless of the scale of our means. By developing alternative financing models, we organized events where waste is minimized.

We ensured that every project launched through our ecological, social, and financial values is scalable, striving to create a multiplier effect that makes a difference in the lives of millions.

Through our communication strategies, we placed great importance on ensuring the visibility of our projects in both national and international arenas.

We shared our activity reports and detailed expenditure tables with our Dream Partners, adhering to the principle of full transparency.

With our Track Your Impact™ system, we proved our social impact by enabling you to see exactly which regions Sinemasal events reached.

We organized festivals that brought children together with cinema. For the sake of sustainable solutions, we provided training and consultancy services to local governments, non-governmental organizations, and youth groups. We carried out efforts to improve public policies to completely eliminate the issue of access.
